Jeen International Adds Novel Silicone Polymer

Jeen International has introduced a line of patent-pending silicone polymer systems utilizing a new novel polymer. Marketed under the Jeesilc PS trade name (INCI: Bis vinyl dimethiconedimethicone copolymer), the new series of products have skin care, hair care and color cosmetic applications.

According to the company, the new polymer enhances texture, spread, refractive index and overall product film integrity of cosmetic formulations. This polymer is a non-crosslinked linear polymer that leaves a soft powdery feel, while improving the conditioning properties of skin and hair. The Jeesilc PS series offers clear gels of cyclomethicone, dimethicone and isododecane solvents. In addition, the Jeesilc PS series includes high polymer concentration products that are designed to enhance substantivity without compromising the preferred aesthetics of the formulations.

These new non-crosslinked silicone  products are ideal for improving skin feel and texture in addition to enhancing film-forming properties, according to the company. More info: (800) 771-JEEN (5336); e-mail: [email protected].

Symrise Combats Aging and Stress

Symrise has added two groups of active ingredients derived from plant extracts to its portfolio. IBR-TCLC is based on colorless carotenoids in tomatoes, which are extracted before the tomatoes can convert them into a red pigment. IBR-CLC is also based on the extraction of colorless caratenoids, but from algae.

The activity profile of these colorless carotenoids have antioxidant, UV-protective, anti-inflammatory and anti-mutagenic properties. Having fewer double bonds makes IBR-CLC and IBR-TCLC significantly more stable than classic carotenoids. The products are suitable for use in anti-aging, UV-protection and personal care products.

Another product, IBR-dormin, has introduced a completely new approach toward maintaining youthful skin, using extracts from the bulbous plants of the genus Narcissus. IBR-dormin calms the cells, and the slower rate of division gives them more time to fully develop their protective functions. Skin that is protected and which takes more time for cell division stays younger longer. IBR-dormin is formulated for anti-aging, anti-wrinkle, personal care and after-sun products. This extract also acts as a whitening agent via yet another mechanism. More info: Dirk Sorgenfrey; +49 40 3557-1976; [email protected].

Lyondell Expands Cooling Agent Offering

Lyondell Chemical Company announced that its Millennium Specialty Chemicals business has a new series of cooling systems for the flavor and fragrance industry. WinSense Extra is a new series of proprietary cooling blends that provides unprecedented benefits, including an enhanced sensory experience and intense cooling of the mouth from a lower cost, easily formulated liquid, according to Lyondell representatives.

“The new products provide cost and performance advantages for our customers,” said Rekha Menon-Varma, market manager, flavor ingredients. “We leveraged our expertise to produce systems with a fresh, clean cooling profile and responded to a market need for cost-effective cooling agents that overcome ingredient-use restraints faced by our global customers.”

Most cooling agents are supplied as crystals or powders; consequently, formulating them evenly into finished products can be challenging. Additionally, adding solvents to a formulation can impart a bitter aftertaste. In contrast, WinSense Extra systems are solvent-free liquids which are easy to use and disperse evenly in product formulations. Nova Launches Electronic Skin Hydration System

NOVA Technology Corp.’s new non-invasive, electronic skin hydration instrument, the Penguin, is portable, battery operated and has wireless transmission capabilities. It contains more than enough memory to store data from a full study. The Penguin’s software and infrared interface allows data to be sent wirelessly to a PC and then is automatically saved in an Excel spreadsheet. The Penguin never needs to be plugged into any external power source. It also measures skin surface temperature.

“Nova is pleased to develop the first, true portable skin hydration device using infrared technology, thereby eliminating the need for wires along with the connection issues they can sometimes create,” said, Robie Dube, director of engineering.

Michael Campbell Nova president added, “The new Penguin technology has exceeded our objective to provide a new high-tech, portable, easy-to-use device to the personal care industry. More info: www.novatechcorp.com.

Eastman Creates Rice Bran Oil-Based Active

Eastman Chemical Company has introduced NutriLayer, a natural active ingredient for topical skin and face creams, sunscreens and lip care. Derived from rice bran, NutriLayer is a powerful antioxidant that nourishes, soothes and protects the skin through a combination of naturally occurring ingredients, according to the company.

“NutriLayer helps personal care brands meet consumer demand for holistic, natural treatments that yield touchable, visible results,” said James McCaulley, Eastman’s global market development manager, personal care.

NutriLayer (INCI: Oryza sativa bran butter) is a nonsaponifiable fraction extracted from non-genetically modified organic rice and is not chemically altered. Eastman states that the product delivers the essential, highly concentrated moisturizing and antioxidant benefits of rice bran. Ideal for rich night creams and lighter day creams, the company says it forms a protective barrier on the skin that entraps water, effectively locking in moisture at low concentrations.

NutriLayer contains naturally occurring rice bran wax, squalene and phytosterols, as well as tocopherols and tocotrienol—multiple forms of vitamin E that help slow the oxidation of skin’s natural lipids and moisturizers. More info: www.eastman.com.

Cognis’ Litchiderm Provides Holistic Wellness

In response to consumer demands for products to enhance their sense of well-being, Laboratoires Sérobiologiques (LS), the active ingredients business of Cognis Care Chemicals, has developed the multifunctional active Litchiderm LS 9704 (INCI: Butylene glycol and litchi chinensis pericarp extract), a lychee extract which protects and hydrates the skin, and leaves it feeling fruity-fresh.

The lychee fruit (Litchi chinensis sonn.) is native to southern China and is highly prized for its astringent, analgesic, stomachic and fortifying properties. Tea made from the pericarp of the fruit is said to cure skin rashes, and decoctions of the roots, bark and flowers are traditionally used to cure sore throats. LS discovered that extracts from the pericarp also strengthen the skin’s natural defense mechanisms.

The syrupy amber liquid is soluble in water and insoluble in fats and oils. Litchiderm LS 9704 must be introduced below 60°C during the finishing process or at room temperature for cold processing. More info www.cognis.com.

Kyowa Hakko Unveils Lumistor and Resilen-200

Kyowa Hakko’s array of products includes high quality amino acids, amino acid derivatives, peptides, nucleic acids and other related materials. The biotechnology, fermentation and chemical synthesis company recently introduced two fermentation-based ingredients for use in cosmetics, food and oral supplementation.

Kyowa Hakko’s Lumistor L-Hydroxyproline is a pure, non-animal amino acid. Due to its physiological activity, the human fibroblast cells activate the collagen synthesis in the skin, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, as well as increasing the moisture retention of skin, imparting softness and radiance.

Resilen-200, a low molecular weight hyaluronic acid, is manufactured by a proprietary fermentation process. Because of its low molecular weight, it is absorbed through the skin, increasing moisture levels and smoothness. When combined with Lumistor, fine lines and wrinkles are reduced by 45%, after seven weeks of topical use, according to the company. More info: E-mail: [email protected].
